Install

Install on the Spark

Updated

"The Spark" is a compact arm64 Linux computer with a GPU, running an Ubuntu 24.04 based system. Filamama installs on it the same way as on any Linux machine.

Status: supported through the Linux installer, but not yet tested on Spark hardware itself.

The full guide is on filamama.com/install/spark. In short:

Install the tools

sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y git curl ffmpeg
curl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/nvm-sh/nvm/v0.40.8/install.sh | bash
# open a new terminal, then:
nvm install 26

Ubuntu 24.04's libheif can't read some HEIC photos from iOS 18 and later, so for HEIC previews take libheif 1.18.2 or newer from its authors' PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:strukturag/libheif
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:strukturag/libde265
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y libheif-examples libheif-plugin-libde265

No compiler is needed: Filamama's two native modules ship ready-made builds for Linux arm64.

Install and keep it running

packaging/install.sh --dry-run
packaging/install.sh
sudo loginctl enable-linger $USER

To keep the originals on an external disk, pass --originals-dir /media/$USER/Photos/filamama, and mount the disk with an /etc/fstab entry: a desktop automount under /media may only be there while you're logged in.

If you also use the Spark for heavy work, Filamama keeps running alongside. It processes two new items at a time in the background, so a big first backup won't take over the machine.
