Filamama vs Nextcloud Memories.
Memories is an open-source photo app that runs inside Nextcloud, the self-hosted server for files and more. It suits households that already run Nextcloud and want their photos in the same place.

Small numbers are sources, listed at the bottom; Filamama's column comes from its own specification and code (source 1). "Not checked" means we didn't find it in Nextcloud's own docs, pages or code, so we don't claim either way. Checked on 17 October 2026.
Where Filamama is ahead
- One program built for photos and videos, installed natively. Memories needs a Nextcloud server first.
- An interrupted upload picks up at the exact byte. Nextcloud resumes by chunk and keeps unfinished chunks for 24 hours.
- The server makes no outbound calls. Nextcloud's update checker is on by default and sends version details to the updater server.
Where Nextcloud is ahead
- If you already run Nextcloud, Memories adds photos without another server.
- Faces and AI tagging with the Recognize app. Filamama has these only as planned features.
- Albums, external sharing, and access away from home.
- An iPhone app, and a published open-source licence (AGPL-3.0).
Switching from Nextcloud
There's no importer yet. You can run Filamama next to Nextcloud, pair your Android phone with Piktures and let it back up what's on the phone. Your Nextcloud files stay where they are; indexing existing folders on disk is a planned feature.
